Families are always welcome to be a part of every therapy session. Whenever appropriate, we involve parents directly in therapy activities, engaging parents in hands-on learning. For parents who prefer to observe, we dedicate time at the end of each session to discuss the skills taught during the session. As new skills are taught, home practice programs will be provided to families to support ongoing development within daily routines.
EVALUATIONS for speech, language, & literacy
Evaluations allow us to develop a comprehensive understanding of a child's skills in all areas of concern. In order to provide quality therapy, we use a variety of assessment tools to understand the underlying cause of your child's challenges.
Evaluations begin with a conversation with parents to gather information about the child's developmental and medical history, academic experiences, strengths, challenges, and preferences. To assess a child's skills, an evaluation also includes observation, a speech-language sample, therapist-child interaction, and formal assessment measures when appropriate.
Following the evaluation, we will review the results with the family. If therapy is recommended, we will collaborate with parents to develop an individualized therapy plan with developmentally appropriate goals.
SPEECH & LANGUAGE therapy
At Play on Speech Therapy, we are committed to supporting each child in reaching their full communication potential. Each child's goals and unique skills and preferences will guide our therapeutic approach. As we know children learn best when they are engaged, we incorporate motivating activities such as games, crafts, books, songs, and imaginary play into our sessions. Whether in-person or via teletherapy, every therapy session will keep your child involved in the learning process and having fun!
LITERACY therapy
We understand the importance of addressing literacy-related challenges early on. Whether a child is having difficulty learning letter names and sounds or has a dyslexia diagnosis, we have advanced training and education in providing literacy intervention. Therapy addresses literacy skills such as:
-
Pre-reading skills
-
Learning letter names and sounds
-
Decoding words and sight word recognition
-
Spelling and writing
-
Reading fluency
-
Reading comprehension
-
Vocabulary development
FEEDING & SWALLOWING evaluations & therapy
During the feeding evaluation, we will gather information about your child's medical and developmental history. We will also discuss food preferences and aversions and related sensory concerns. We will then assess feeding and swallowing skills using a combination of preferred and non-preferred foods. Following the evaluation, we will discuss the results and make recommendations for therapy.
If therapy is recommended, we will tailor each session to your child's specific feeding and swallowing needs. Using developmentally appropriate approaches, we will target goals such as increasing sensory tolerance, developing oral motor skills for chewing, reducing avoidance behaviors during mealtimes, etc. As parent coaching is essential to successful feeding therapy, we will collaborate with parents to provide education, tools, and strategies for ongoing home practice.
